Kerala police arrest Shimjitha Mustafa for sharing sexual harassment video

Thiruvananthapuram : Kerala police have arrested Shimjitha Mustafa for sharing a video of alleged sexual harassment on a private bus, which had gone viral on social media. The arrest comes after public outrage and a complaint filed following the suicide of the man featured in the video.

Shimjitha was taken into custody at a relative’s residence in Koyikkod, Badagara, under charges of abetment of suicide. The incident unfolded when Deepak, the man allegedly harassed on the bus, took his own life.

Although investigations revealed that Deepak had committed no wrongdoing, the viral video triggered significant criticism on social media, prompting authorities to act against Shimjitha.

The victim’s parents had filed a complaint, leading to a non-bailable case under relevant legal provisions. Shimjitha had gone missing after the case was registered, turning off her phone. The court has now ordered four days of judicial custody for her.

Police statements indicate that there was no altercation or dispute between the two individuals during the bus journey. Both the driver, conductor, and other passengers confirmed that no unusual incident occurred while traveling. The conductor also noted that Shimjitha did not request help at any point during the journey.

Authorities are emphasizing that sharing such videos on social media, especially when it leads to serious consequences, is a criminal offence under Indian law. The police investigation continues to ascertain the extent of Shimjitha’s actions and their impact.

The case has reignited debates over privacy, social media accountability, and the responsibility of individuals while recording or sharing content involving others without consent.
