Thanisandra demolition: BDA clears illegal sheds, families in distress
Bengaluru : Following the Kogilu Layout operation, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BDA) has continued its demolition drive in Thanisandra, targeting unauthorized constructions. Early this morning, BDA officials entered the area and removed illegal sheds, taking possession of properties worth approximately ₹100 crore.
Under the High Court’s directive, 22 houses were demolished in Thanisandra. The structures included car garages, warehouses, and sheet-metal homes.
Most of the affected residents were tenants, and the ownership details of the demolished houses remain unclear. Many families were reportedly caught off guard, with demolition carried out suddenly without prior notice.
Residents and eyewitnesses expressed outrage at the operation. Many families were forced onto the streets, with personal belongings strewn across the area. Mothers were seen carrying small children, raising their voices against the government’s action. One family reportedly threatened self-harm during the demolition, holding a bottle of poison to protest the loss of their home.
Several residents claimed they had purchased their houses legally, spending up to ₹53 lakh with proper E-Khata and property documentation. Despite presenting these records, the demolitions proceeded, fueling anger and protests among the affected households.
The operation in Thanisandra follows a similar drive in Kogilu Layout, where the authorities had earlier carried out large-scale demolitions. These actions have raised concerns over the lack of notice and the displacement of families, prompting calls for more transparent processes and rehabilitation measures.
BDA officials, however, have stated that the operation was conducted strictly under legal orders and aimed at removing illegal constructions to maintain urban planning standards. The authorities have yet to provide a detailed explanation regarding the handling of tenants and the rehabilitation of displaced families.
As the demolition drive continues across Bengaluru, affected families and social activists are urging the government to ensure proper compensation and alternative housing for those displaced by the operation.
