No alcohol, only milk: Jaipur welcomes New Year with a health message

Jaipur: On the eve of the New Year, the capital city of Rajasthan, Jaipur, welcomed 2026 with a unique and socially relevant message. Instead of alcohol-fuelled celebrations, the city promoted a healthy start to the New Year by distributing milk across more than 200 locations.

Nearly one lakh litres of milk were distributed, conveying a clear message: celebrate the New Year with milk, not alcohol. The initiative was led by the Rajasthan Youth Students’ Organisation in association with the Indian Asthma Care Society.

A major milk distribution programme was organised at the main gate of Rajasthan University, where thousands of people — from small children to senior citizens — willingly accepted and consumed milk.

The event attracted widespread public participation and appreciation for its positive social intent. Additional Police Commissioner Rajeev Pachhar, who visited the venue, praised the organisers for the initiative.

Speaking on the occasion, he said, “Distributing milk at the Rajasthan University gate on New Year’s Eve is a highly commendable effort. It sends a strong message that the New Year should begin with milk instead of alcohol.

A good beginning on the very first day sets the tone for the entire year. I appeal to everyone to celebrate the New Year peacefully and responsibly.” The milk distribution drive has a history spanning over two decades.

It began 21 years ago with the distribution of just 500 litres of milk on New Year’s Eve. Over the years, the initiative has grown significantly. This year alone, around 8,000 litres of milk were distributed at the Rajasthan University gate, while the total distribution across Jaipur crossed one lakh litres, covering more than 200 locations in the city.

Renowned asthma specialist Dr Virendra Singh also welcomed the initiative and highlighted its health benefits. “Starting the New Year with milk instead of alcohol is a very positive thought.

Alcohol damages the human body, while milk is beneficial for health. Protecting one’s health is a fundamental right of every individual. This programme sends out a strong message of healthy living and responsible celebration,” he said.

Dr Singh further emphasised the role of youth in shaping the nation’s future. “Young people play a decisive role in nation-building. The future generation must be made aware of the dangers of addiction.

Milk is highly nutritious, while alcohol is extremely harmful to health. Let us give up bad habits and adopt good ones,” he urged. The initiative has emerged as a powerful symbol of social awareness, encouraging citizens to celebrate the New Year with health, discipline and positivity rather than intoxication.
