Group attack on James’ concert in Bangladesh leaves 20 students injured

In a shocking incident in Bangladesh, at least 20 students were injured following a violent group attack on a music concert by popular rock singer James.

The concert, which was scheduled to take place on Friday evening in Faridpur, was part of the 185th anniversary celebrations of a local school. Authorities have since confirmed that the event was called off due to the escalating violence.

The chaos erupted when a group attempted to storm the stage ahead of the performance. Reports suggest that the attackers hurled bricks and stones in an effort to disrupt the event, while the school students tried to prevent the assault.

The confrontation led to injuries for a number of students, though the exact number of fatalities remains unconfirmed. According to Additional Police Superintendent (Sadar Circle) Azmeer Hossain, the authorities are still gathering detailed information regarding the incident.

Concert Cancelled
Due to the growing tension and the unsafe situation, the local administration in Faridpur ordered the cancellation of the concert. Mustafaizur Rehman Shamim, the event’s organizer, complied with the directive, and the concert was called off just before it could begin. The cancellation of the event was reported by The Daily Star.

Rajibul Hasan Khan, the head of the publicity and media sub-committee for the event, stated that the reason behind the attack remains unclear. “We do not know who carried out the attack or why. The decision to cancel the event was made in compliance with the district administration’s order,” he said.

James, the well-known singer, guitarist, and songwriter, is widely recognized for his contributions to the Bangladeshi music scene and for singing numerous songs for Hindi films. His concerts and performances are a major draw for fans, making the violence at this event particularly shocking.

Condemnation from Writer Taslima Nasrin
The attack has sparked widespread outrage, including condemnation from notable figures. Renowned writer Taslima Nasrin took to social media to express her disgust over the attack on artists and musicians in the country.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Nasrin criticized the growing violence against cultural figures, stating, “The cultural center Chhayanat has been burned to the ground, and the Udichi organization, known for promoting secular and progressive ideals through music, drama, dance, literature, and folk culture, was also set on fire. Now, jihadists are not allowing famous singer James to perform at an event. This is an attack on culture.”

Nasrin’s post highlighted the rising attacks on cultural institutions and figures in Bangladesh, particularly against those promoting secularism and the arts. The country has seen a disturbing trend of violence against artists and performers, with several cultural spaces being targeted in recent years.

Background of the Attack
The concert, which had been highly anticipated, was to feature James, one of Bangladesh’s most iconic and respected rock stars. He is known for his deep voice, iconic guitar skills, and contributions to the Bengali music industry. As news of the attack spread, fans of James and the public in general expressed their shock and anger.

The details of who was behind the attack remain unclear, but it underscores the growing concerns over the safety of cultural events in Bangladesh, especially when they are perceived as challenging conservative or religious norms. With many questioning the motives behind such attacks, the incident has cast a shadow over the country’s cultural landscape.

Ongoing Investigation
Local authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, but there are few details available regarding the attackers. The school event organizers and local police are working together to identify the group responsible and the underlying reasons for the attack. As of now, the injured students are being treated, and the situation remains tense in the region.

The incident is also likely to stir further debates over freedom of expression, religious extremism, and the protection of cultural events in Bangladesh.

As authorities continue to gather facts, the incident has sparked widespread concern about the safety of artists and performers in the country, with many calling for stronger protections for cultural institutions.
