Dhaka: Incidents of violence in Bangladesh continue to raise serious concerns, with minority communities increasingly finding themselves at the center of attacks.
In a fresh incident, a Hindu man was beaten to death in Rajbari district, adding to fears that members of minority communities are being deliberately targeted amid a deteriorating law-and-order situation.
The victim has been identified as 29-year-old Amrit Mandal, also known as Samrat. According to reports, the incident occurred around 11 pm on Wednesday night near the Hosaidanga Old Market area in Rajbari district. A mob allegedly assaulted Amrit Mandal, leading to his death.
Police from the Pangsha police station said that Amrit Mandal was a resident of Hosaidanga village. Local residents reportedly accused him of being involved in extortion, a claim that police say is being cited as the reason behind the attack.
However, no independent confirmation of these allegations has been made so far, and the investigation is still ongoing. The killing has drawn parallels with a recent case involving Deepu Chandra Das, another Hindu man who was lynched and later set on fire.
In that case, it was initially claimed that Das had insulted Islam, an allegation that was later proven to be false. Rights activists and community members have expressed concern that similar accusations are now being used to justify violence against minorities, including in the case of Amrit Mandal.
Observers note that branding victims as criminals or offenders after such attacks may be an attempt to legitimize mob violence and divert attention from the broader issue of communal targeting. Minority groups in Bangladesh, particularly Hindus, have repeatedly raised alarms over rising insecurity and lack of adequate protection.
The latest killing comes amid a wider surge in unrest across Bangladesh. Since the 2024 Bangladesh riots, incidents of violence have reportedly increased. Anti-India sentiment has also intensified during this period.
On December 12, Usman Hadi, said to be a key figure behind the 2024 unrest and known for his anti-India stance, was shot. He later succumbed to his injuries. Following his death, violent incidents across different regions of the country have reportedly escalated.
Indian diplomatic establishments in Bangladesh have also been targeted in recent weeks, while attacks on Hindu homes, temples, and individuals have been reported by various sources. Analysts warn that unless decisive steps are taken to restore law and order and ensure accountability, the cycle of violence could further deepen communal divisions.
Authorities have said that investigations into the Rajbari incident are underway, even as calls grow for stronger action to protect minority communities and curb mob violence in the country.
