Modi launches Guwahati airport terminal, accuses Congress of neglecting Assam and shielding infiltrators

Guwahati: Launching a sharp attack on the Congress, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday accused the party of neglecting Assam and the entire Northeast during its years in power and compromising regional security by protecting illegal infiltrators.

Addressing a public rally after inaugurating the new terminal at the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati, the Prime Minister said the Congress never considered the development of Assam and the Northeast as part of its political agenda.

He alleged that during Congress rule, infiltrators were allowed to encroach upon forest land and other government property, posing a serious threat to Assam’s security, identity and prestige.

Referring to the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, Modi said the exercise was aimed at preventing infiltrators from misusing the democratic system.

While the Centre was taking strict steps to curb infiltration, he alleged that some “anti-national elements” were trying to shield such forces for political gain. “For decades, Congress protected infiltrators, putting national security at risk,” he claimed.

The Prime Minister said that violence and instability had plagued Assam and the Northeast for several decades under previous governments. “In the last 10 to 11 years, the situation has begun to change.

Districts that were once known for violence are today emerging as ‘aspirational districts’, moving on the path of development,” he said, attributing the change to firm governance and focused development policies.

Highlighting the BJP’s governance model, Modi said that under the party’s “double-engine government” at the Centre and in Assam, development in the state was progressing smoothly and rapidly. He compared the pace of growth to the uninterrupted flow of the mighty Brahmaputra river.

The Prime Minister asserted that the BJP government was correcting historical mistakes made over decades and ensuring peace, security and inclusive development in the Northeast.

He added that the region, once viewed as neglected and disturbed, was now becoming a growth engine for the country, with improved infrastructure, connectivity and investment opportunities.
