Senior Congress MLA Shamanur Shivashankarappa passed away

Senior Congress MLA and veteran Karnataka politician, Shamanur Shivashankarappa, has passed away He was a prominent figure in Karnataka politics, representing the Davangere South constituency. He was also a noted industrialist and educationalist.

Shamanur Shivashankarappa (94), Congress MLA from Davangere South constituency and national president of Akhil Bharat Veerashaiva Maha Sabha, has passed away. Shamanur Shivashankarappa, who was suffering from age-related problems, was admitted to a private hospital in Bengaluru. However, he breathed his last today (December 14) evening due to ineffective treatment.

Shamanur Shivashankarappa had a long and influential political career in Karnataka, spanning several decades. He was recognized as one of the state’s veteran Congress leaders and was a major figure representing the powerful Veerashaiva-Lingayat community from the Central Karnataka region.

He was a multi-term MLA, most recently representing the Davangere South Assembly constituency. He was known for his dedication to his traditional constituency. He was the oldest serving member of a State Legislative Assembly in India in his final term.

Shivashankarappa served as a Minister in the Government of Karnataka, holding the portfolio of Horticulture and Agricultural Marketing from 2013 to 2016. He was also elected as a Member of Parliament to the Lok Sabha from the Davanagere constituency, serving from 1998 to 1999.

President, All India Veerashaiva Mahasabha: This was arguably his most influential non-political role, as he led the apex body of the Veerashaiva-Lingayat community, a numerically dominant and politically significant group in Karnataka.

Known by the affectionate title ‘Appaji’, he leveraged his industrial wealth and position as Chairman of the Bapuji Educational Association (BEA) to establish Davangere as a major educational hub, with numerous professional institutions, including medical and engineering colleges. His work in the education and business sectors significantly elevated his public standing.
