Four deaths reported in Haveri amid traditional bull-taming contests

Haveri: The district has witnessed a tragic escalation in casualties during the traditional bull-taming competitions, with four people losing their lives this year. On Thursday, a 40-year-old man, identified as Srikant Konankere, died in Yalavatti village of Hangal taluk following injuries sustained while participating in the festivities.
The incident occurred during a local bull-taming event held to mark the Diwali celebrations. According to reports, Srikant was returning home after participating in the contest when he was gored by a bull. He was immediately admitted to KIMS Hospital in Hubballi, but despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries. A case has been registered at Hangal Police Station, and an investigation is underway.
This tragic death brings the total number of fatalities in the district from bull-taming competitions this season to four. Earlier, Chandrashekhar Kodihalli lost his life in Haveri city, while Ghanisab of Devihosuru village and Bharat of Tilavalli also died in separate incidents during similar events.
In response to the fatalities, the Haveri Police Department has issued warnings and taken a strict stance. Cases have been filed against the event organizers and bull owners, and police are conducting detailed investigations. Authorities are examining whether the organizers had obtained the necessary permissions, what precautionary measures were in place, and are probing potential instances of animal cruelty. Cases have been registered across several police stations, including Haveri city, rural areas, Adur, and Hangal, as part of a comprehensive inquiry.
The bull-taming competition is traditionally held as part of the Veerabhadreswara Temple Rathotsava during Diwali. This year, the event, organized by the festival committee, took place on Wednesday afternoon in the presence of farmers from Haveri city and neighboring villages. Over 300 bulls participated, many of which were given special names such as Haveri Ka Raja, Bhairava, John, Haveri Huli, Sarathi, Haveri MP, Haveri Kranti, and Ekalavya, attracting considerable attention. While the local competition did not offer prizes, winners in subsequent events received awards.
Police have reiterated the need for strict adherence to safety protocols in future events, urging both participants and organizers to ensure preventive measures are in place to avoid further tragedies.
