Devotees throng Deviramma hill braving rain and rough terrain for annual darshan
Chikkamagaluru: The annual Bindiga Deviramma Jatre began at Mallenahalli village in Chikkamagaluru taluk with thousands of devotees climbing the steep and slippery Deviramma hill barefoot, undeterred by rain, cold, or fatigue, to seek the Goddess’s blessings.
From as early as 6 a.m, devotees began the uphill trek barefoot through rugged paths filled with rocks, mud, and thorns. The entire hill was packed with devotees who came from various parts of the state, turning the usually quiet slopes into a sea of faith and devotion.
This unique festival is held only once a year when the deity gives darshan. Despite overnight rains that made the path slippery, devotees continued their climb enthusiastically, helping each other along the way and capturing memories through selfies and photos to share on social media.
The idol of Deviramma was ceremoniously carried to the hilltop and installed for devotees’ worship on Sunday morning. Many fulfilled vows by carrying logs uphill, which were later used for ritual offerings.
Police, fire personnel, and rescue teams were stationed along the route to assist devotees. Their timely help — including using ropes to pull devotees up from steep sections — earned widespread appreciation. Traffic regulations were strictly implemented near Mallenahalli to prevent congestion.
This year, authorities have allowed devotees two days for darshan due to heavy rain warnings. While thousands visited on Sunday, an even larger turnout is expected on Monday.
Superintendent of Police Vikram Amathe urged devotees to use KSRTC buses instead of private vehicles to avoid parking issues caused by continuous rain. Parking arrangements have been made at designated locations in Chikkamagaluru, Kadur, and nearby areas, with shuttle bus services to Mallenahalli for devotees.
The annual Deviramma festival, celebrated amidst mist, devotion, and chants, once again reflected the deep faith that continues to draw thousands to the sacred hill every year.
