Islamabad: Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir issues renewed nuclear threat to India

Islamabad: Tensions in South Asia escalated once again as Pakistan army chief General Marshal Asim Munir once again issued veiled nuclear threats against India, raising alarm over regional security. Munir, who recently made provocative statements on U.S. soil claiming, “We will destroy half the world before we are destroyed,” has now directed similar rhetoric toward India.

Addressing cadets at the Pakistan Military Academy (PMA) in Kakul, Munir said, “The expanding military capabilities of Islamabad will shatter any erroneous assumptions about India’s geographic battlefield calculations.” He stressed that even minor provocations from India could invite “decisive nuclear retaliation” from Pakistan, underscoring the gravity of the situation.

He added, “Should a new wave of conflict arise, Pakistan will respond in a manner exceeding the expectations of the instigators. As the line between combat and communication narrows, the reach and lethality of our weapon systems will expose any flawed geographic assumptions about India.”

Munir’s comments follow similar statements he made during his visit to the U.S., reflecting a pattern of escalating rhetoric. Indian intelligence officials have flagged these pronouncements as highly provocative, particularly given the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, where 26 tourists were killed. Reports indicate that Munir’s previous remarks labeling insurgent actions in Kashmir as a “freedom struggle” may have emboldened the attackers.

Pakistan Defense Minister Khawaja Asif also accused India of interfering in Afghanistan and targeting Pakistani interests, adding to the narrative of regional hostility. Analysts note that such statements, coupled with Pakistan’s ongoing militarization along the border, could destabilize South Asian security.

The Field Marshal emphasized that “the responsibility for any catastrophic consequences in the region ultimately rests with India,” suggesting that any escalation would be met with proportional, and potentially nuclear, retaliation. Despite these threats, India has publicly maintained that it will not be cowed by Pakistan’s provocative statements.

This latest statement comes amid ongoing disputes over water resources, border security, and regional influence, with the Sindhu River dam projects and cross-border operations adding to the friction. Analysts say that while Munir’s rhetoric is alarming, India’s strategic and defensive preparedness remains robust, signaling that Pakistan’s threats may be more bluster than actionable policy.

The international community is closely monitoring developments, emphasizing the need for restraint and adherence to global nuclear non-proliferation norms to prevent a broader regional crisis.

Experts warn that Munir’s repeated nuclear warnings, combined with Islamabad’s expanding military infrastructure, heighten the risk of miscalculations in the volatile India-Pakistan relationship. Observers are calling for urgent diplomatic engagement to de-escalate tensions and prevent a potential nuclear confrontation.
