Pakistan-Afghanistan Border Conflict Ends with Ceasefire Brokered by Qatar and Turkey

Pakistan-Afghanistan Border Conflict: After more than a week of escalating military tensions and deadly airstrikes, Pakistan and Afghanistan have agreed to an immediate ceasefire, following high-level diplomatic talks mediated by Qatar and Turkey in Doha.

The announcement was made by Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday, marking a significant breakthrough in the volatile border dispute. The conflict had claimed numerous lives, including three Afghan cricketers, and left hundreds injured.

Both nations had accused each other of initiating aggression, with Pakistan citing strikes on militant hideouts in Afghanistan’s Paktika province, while Afghan officials reported civilian casualties, including women and children.

According to Qatar’s statement, both sides have committed to future negotiations aimed at establishing mechanisms for lasting peace and stability. Delegations from both countries, including their respective defense ministers, participated in the Doha talks.

Pakistan emphasized its intent to eliminate cross-border terrorism and restore calm along the frontier. Afghanistan, however, denied harboring militants and accused Pakistan of violating the earlier two-day ceasefire, which ended Friday evening.

Within hours, Pakistan launched fresh airstrikes, reportedly targeting the Hafiz Gul Bahadur militant group, although Afghan officials claim at least 10 civilians were killed.

The renewed ceasefire comes amid mounting pressure from regional powers including Saudi Arabia and Qatar, who have urged both nations to prioritize diplomacy over conflict.

In response to the airstrikes, the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) announced a boycott of upcoming matches scheduled in Pakistan, citing the loss of players and civilians.

The situation remains delicate, but the ceasefire offers a window for de-escalation and dialogue. Further diplomatic engagement is expected in the coming days to ensure the truce holds and a framework for peace is established.
