Senior IPS officer Y. Poorn Kumar dies by suicide in Chandigarh

Chandigarh: Senior IPS officer Y. Poorn Kumar allegedly died by suicide after shooting himself at his official residence in Sector-11, Chandigarh. Police rushed to the spot and began investigation, though the exact reason behind the drastic step remains unclear.

Poorn Kumar, an Additional Director General of Police (ADGP)-rank officer, had recently been transferred to Rohtak’s Sunaria Jail on September 29. The same jail houses Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, who is serving a sentence for sexually assaulting his followers.

His wife, Aman P. Kumar, is also an IPS officer and is currently in Japan with Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini and other officials. She is expected to return to India tomorrow evening.

Sources recalled that last year, Poorn Kumar had raised objections over the promotion of several IPS officers from the 1991, 1996, 1997, and 2005 batches. He had written to the Haryana Chief Minister, alleging that the Finance Department had bypassed Home Ministry norms while approving those promotions.

The police have taken up a detailed investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
