Heavy Rainfall Alert: Red alert issued in three coastal districts for 2 days
Heavy Rainfall Alert: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a “red alert” for heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in the coastal Karnataka districts of Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, and Uttara Kannada.
A red alert signifies a high risk of extremely heavy rainfall (more than 204.4 mm in 24 hours), which can lead to flooding, landslides, and disruption of daily life. The red alert is in effect for August 17 and 18, 2025.
The IMD has predicted that the intensity of the rain will be extremely heavy over Udupi and Uttara Kannada districts, while Dakshina Kannada is also expected to receive very heavy rainfall.
Following the red alert period, an “orange alert” has been issued for the three coastal districts for August 19 and 20. An orange alert warns of very heavy rainfall (115.6 mm to 204.4 mm). This weather is being influenced by a developing low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, which is enhancing monsoon activity over the state.

The district administrations have issued warnings to the public. Residents are advised to stay away from water bodies, avoid low-lying areas, and take all necessary precautions. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea until at least August 20 due to the high likelihood of strong winds and rough seas.

It is important for residents and travelers in these regions to stay updated with local weather reports and follow all advisories issued by the authorities.
