World Malayalee Council: The World Malayalee Council (WMC) has announced a significant Rs 1 crore scholarship for female nursing students of Kerala origin who are pursuing their studies in various parts of the world.
This announcement was made by Dr. Babu Stephen, the newly appointed president of the World Malayalee Council, during its 14th biennial conference held in Bangkok.

The conference was held in Bangkok, Thailand. It concluded on July 27, 2025, after being a three-day “Vishwa Malayali Sneha Sangamam” (Global Malayalee Friendship Gathering) at the Royal Orchid Sheraton. A significant outcome was the swearing-in of the new global office bearers for the 2025-2027 term.
Other key appointments included Shaji Mathew (Council Secretary General), Sunny Veliyath (Treasurer), James Koodal (Vice President – Admin), Surendran Kannat (Vice Chairman), Selina Mohan (Women’s Forum Chairman), Sheela Reji (Women’s Forum President), and Reshma Reji (Youth Forum President). Thomas Mottackal, the former president, continues as Chairman.
Major Announcement: Rs 1 Crore Nursing Scholarship: As mentioned earlier, Dr. Babu Stephen announced a Rs 1 crore scholarship specifically for female nursing students of Kerala origin who are studying globally. This scholarship aims to support 100 students initially, selected from all 14 districts of Kerala.
The World Malayalee Council’s global office is scheduled to be inaugurated in Kochi on August 3, 2025. This indicates a strengthened operational base in Kerala itself. Discussions were held about hosting the next annual convention in the United States.
The conference was attended by various dignitaries, including MP John Brittas, former MP K. Muraleedharan, Murukan Kattakada, actress Sona Nair, and actor-producer Dinesh Panicker. Business forum awards were presented to several American industrialists, including Jim George, Thomas Mottackal, Shaji Mathew, and Surendran Kannat.
The new leadership is expected to deepen WMC’s presence in international forums, foster cross-cultural dialogue, promote professional excellence, and uplift communities through philanthropic and educational initiatives. The overall theme was to evolve WMC from a networking body to a global force for advocacy, innovation, and collective impact.
