IMD issued heavy rainfall alert for Karnataka from July 17 to July 31

IMD issued heavy rainfall alert: India Meteorological Department (IMD) and other weather sources, here’s a forecast for heavy rain in Karnataka between July 17 and July 31, 2025. The southwest monsoon is expected to regain its full influence over Karnataka from July 15th onwards.

This indicates a likely increase in rainfall across the state for the latter half of July. Meteorologists predict signs of a depression forming over the Bay of Bengal region around the third week of July. This system is expected to significantly influence rainfall over South Interior Karnataka (SIK) districts, bringing considerable rainfall.

Coastal Karnataka: The coastal districts (Dakshina Kannada, Uttara Kannada, Udupi) typically experience the heaviest rainfall during the monsoon. While the IMD has issued heavy rain warnings for these regions until July 15, it’s highly probable that this trend of intense rainfall will continue, and potentially intensify, during the latter half of July due to the active monsoon.

Malnad Region (Western Ghats): Districts like Chikkamagaluru, Hassan, Shivamogga, and Kodagu (part of the Malnad region) are also prone to very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall during the monsoon. They are expected to continue receiving significant rain.

South Interior Karnataka (SIK): This region, including Bengaluru and adjoining districts, is expected to see a considerable increase in rainfall from the third week of July, influenced by the Bay of Bengal system.

North Interior Karnataka (NIK): While the coastal and Malnad regions typically receive more rain, some districts in NIK, like Belagavi and Dharwad, can also experience heavy to very heavy rainfall.

Current Warnings (up to July 15, 2025 – this may extend):

As of July 9, 2025, the IMD has issued “Heavy Rain” warnings for Coastal Karnataka through July 15. For North Interior Karnataka, “Strong Surface Winds” are forecast, and for South Interior Karnataka, “Strong Surface Winds” are also predicted initially, with the expectation of increased rainfall later in the month.

Weather Report for the period July 17-31:

Expect the monsoon to be fully active, leading to widespread and intense rainfall across many parts of Karnataka, particularly the coastal and Malnad regions, and increasingly in South Interior Karnataka.

Heavy to Very Heavy Rain: Many districts will likely experience heavy to very heavy rainfall. Isolated instances of extremely heavy rainfall are possible, especially in coastal and Western Ghats areas. Thunderstorms and Gusty Winds: Rainfall will often be accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds.

Stay Updated: It is crucial to monitor the daily weather bulletins and advisories issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) as the situation can evolve rapidly.

Precautionary Measures: Residents, especially those in flood and landslide-prone areas, should stay alert and follow local advisories. Be prepared for potential disruptions to travel and daily activities.

Safety: Avoid venturing into the sea if you are a fisherman, as coastal warnings are likely to be in effect. Carry umbrellas or raincoats when going out. Given that July is a peak monsoon month for Karnataka, the expectation for heavy rainfall during the latter half of the month is consistent with historical weather patterns and current meteorological predictions.
