Xiaomi HyperOS 4 Update Brings New Glass UI

Xiaomi is giving its upcoming HyperOS 4 update a noticeable visual refresh, and one of the biggest changes is a new Soft Light Glass UI effect. The design uses translucent elements, lighting effects and smoother visual transitions to create a more premium interface.

The new appearance has similarities to Apples Liquid Glass design language, although Xiaomi is using its own implementation and branding. The company has indicated that the effect requires considerable graphics processing, which means it will not arrive on every device receiving HyperOS 4.

For now, the feature is being tested through the HyperOS 4 beta program in China. Xiaomi is expected to expand the rollout to other markets later.

Powerful chipsets get the feature first

Xiaomi says the Soft Light Glass UI will initially focus on devices powered by Snapdragon 8 Elite or newer, Dimensity 9500 or newer and Xring O1 or newer processors. The reason is largely linked to the graphics performance needed for the new interface effects.

However, the company is also considering additional models beyond the first beta group. Older premium devices such as the Redmi K70, Xiaomi 13 and Xiaomi MIX Flip are among the phones expected to be considered for the feature.

The initial list covers a wide selection of Xiaomi and Redmi devices. It includes newer flagship models as well as some older high end smartphones.

Xiaomi MIX series includes Xiaomi MIX Fold 4, Xiaomi MIX Fold 3, Xiaomi MIX Fold 2 and Xiaomi MIX Flip.

The Xiaomi flagship lineup includes the Xiaomi 17 series, Xiaomi 17T series, Xiaomi 15 series, Xiaomi 14 series and Xiaomi 13 series.

The Xiaomi Civi 5 Pro is also included in the reported list.

Redmi K series devices include the Redmi K100 Pro series, Redmi K90 series, Redmi K80 series and Redmi K70 series, although the K70E is excluded.

The Redmi Turbo lineup includes the Redmi Turbo 5 Max, Redmi Turbo 5 and Redmi Turbo 4 Pro.

Several tablets are also part of the rollout. These include Xiaomi Pad 8 Pro, Xiaomi Pad 8, Xiaomi Pad 7 Ultra and Xiaomi Pad 7S Pro.

The Redmi K Pad lineup is represented by the Redmi K Pad 2 and Redmi K Pad.

More devices could join later

The current list should not necessarily be treated as the final list. Xiaomi has already indicated that it wants to bring the new interface effect to additional compatible devices after the initial beta phase.

The Soft Light Glass UI is currently being tested in China, so users in other regions may have to wait for the international HyperOS 4 rollout. Availability could also vary depending on the exact model and processor version sold in each market.

With HyperOS 4, Xiaomi appears to be putting more attention on the look and feel of its software rather than focusing only on performance upgrades. If the new glass style reaches older flagship phones as expected, it could give several existing Xiaomi and Redmi devices a noticeably fresher interface.
