ODI World Cup 2027 New Format: 12 Teams, Super 7 Stage Introduced

The revamped format is designed to increase competitiveness, reduce one-sided matches, and ensure more high-profile contests throughout the tournament.

ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2027 will be played in a completely new format, with the International Cricket Council (ICC) introducing a three-stage tournament structure. The revamped format is designed to increase competitiveness, reduce one-sided matches, and ensure more high-profile contests throughout the tournament.

ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2027 New Format Details:

Stage 1: Super Series

Out of the 14 qualified teams, the three lowest-ranked teams in the ICC rankings will compete in the Super Series. The remaining 11 higher-ranked teams will qualify directly for the next stage. The three teams will play a mini round-robin league, with each team facing the other two once.

Only the top-performing team from the Super Series will advance to the Group Stage, while the remaining two teams will be eliminated.

Stage 2: Group Stage

The winner of the Super Series will join the 11 directly qualified teams, making a total of 12 teams. The 12 teams will be divided into two groups of six teams each (Group A and Group B). Each team will play five matches, facing every other team in its group once.

The top three teams from each group will qualify directly for the next stage (6 teams).  One additional team will also qualify, taking the total to seven teams.

How will the seventh team qualify?

After the Group Stage, the fourth-placed teams from both groups will be compared based on their points. The team with the better record will secure the seventh and final spot in the next round.

Stage 3: Super 7

The seven qualified teams will compete in a single round-robin league, meaning every team will play against the other six teams. A total of 21 matches will be played in this stage.

Knockout Stage

At the end of the Super 7 stage, the top four teams in the points table will qualify for the semi-finals, followed by the final to determine the world champion.

When will the 2027 ODI World Cup Begin?

The 2027 ICC Men’s ODI World Cup is scheduled to be held from October 4 to November 21, 2027. The tournament will be jointly hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.

The ICC has introduced the new structure to eliminate dull, one-sided matches in the early stages and ensure more high-intensity contests between stronger teams. As part of the revamp, the previously proposed Super 6 stage has been replaced with the new Super 7 format.

Under this system, top teams can no longer rely on a single good performance to reach the knockout rounds. Instead, they must consistently perform at a high level throughout the tournament to secure a place in the semi-finals.

Overall, the new Super 7 format is expected to make the 2027 ODI World Cup more competitive and exciting than ever before. Besides enhancing the tournament’s commercial value and broadcasting appeal, the format promises cricket fans a thrilling spectacle filled with high-voltage matches from start to finish.
