Karnataka Braces for Heavy Rain Over the Next 48 Hours; IMD Issues Alerts

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an important weather advisory for Karnataka as the southwest monsoon continues to intensify across the state. Residents, especially in coastal and hilly regions, have been urged to remain vigilant and follow official advisories.

Orange Alert for Coastal Karnataka:

The IMD has issued an Orange Alert for the coastal districts of Uttara Kannada, Dakshina Kannada, and Udupi, where very heavy rainfall is forecast over the next 48 hours.

Authorities have warned that rivers, streams, and other low-lying areas may witness a sudden rise in water levels. District administrations have already initiated precautionary measures to minimize the impact of potential flooding.

Yellow Alert for Malnad Districts:

A Yellow Alert has been issued for the Malnad districts of Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, Hassan, and Kodagu. These regions are likely to experience moderate to heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds.

Residents have been advised to exercise caution, particularly while travelling through vulnerable areas.

Landslide Risk Until July 9:

The Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) has also warned of an increased risk of landslides in the Western Ghats and adjoining hilly regions between July 5 and July 9.

Continuous rainfall has loosened soil on hill slopes, raising concerns over possible landslides. People living in the hilly and vulnerable areas of Uttara Kannada, Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, Kodagu, Hassan, Dakshina Kannada, and Udupi have been advised to remain on high alert and strictly follow instructions issued by local authorities.

With rough sea conditions and strong winds expected along the Karnataka coast, fishermen have been strictly advised not to venture into the sea until weather conditions improve.

Officials have also urged people residing in low-lying and landslide-prone areas to move to safer locations if necessary and stay updated through official weather bulletins.

Authorities have advised tourists and the general public to avoid unnecessary travel during the weekend, particularly to coastal and hilly destinations. Citizens are encouraged to closely monitor updates issued by the IMD and district administrations and take all necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
