Bengaluru has once again emerged at the center of India’s road safety concerns after the latest road accident report highlighted the city as the national leader in crashes linked to overspeeding. Although the overall number of accidents has shown a slight decline compared to the previous year, the latest figures continue to paint a worrying picture for commuters and traffic authorities.
According to the 2024 report released by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Bengaluru recorded 4769 road accidents during the year. These crashes claimed 894 lives and left more than 4000 people injured. While the city witnessed fewer accidents than in 2023, when 4974 incidents and 915 deaths were reported, the numbers remain significantly higher than those recorded just a few years ago.
One of the most striking findings in the report is that the majority of serious accidents occurred on straight and well maintained roads rather than at sharp bends or damaged stretches. A total of 4161 crashes took place on straight roads, resulting in 766 deaths and 3463 injuries. Curved roads accounted for 415 accidents with 87 fatalities, while potholes were linked to only two reported accidents that caused two deaths. Roads under construction saw 21 accidents in which six people lost their lives.
Traffic experts believe that driver behavior, especially excessive speed, is a major factor behind these numbers. Bengaluru recorded 4290 accidents caused by overspeeding, the highest among major Indian cities. These incidents alone led to 776 deaths and more than 3600 injuries. The figures placed Bengaluru ahead of several other large urban centers, highlighting the urgent need for stricter enforcement and improved awareness about speed limits.
The report also pointed to drunk driving as another serious concern. During the year, authorities recorded 129 accidents involving intoxicated drivers, resulting in 45 fatalities. Although these incidents represent a smaller share of total crashes, they continue to demonstrate the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol.
When comparing overall accident numbers across India, Bengaluru ranked second only to Delhi. The national capital reported 5657 accidents and 1551 deaths during the same period. While Bengaluru has experienced a modest reduction in crashes over the past year, the long term trend remains concerning. Compared with 2020, when the city recorded 3233 accidents, the latest figures indicate a substantial increase over the last four years.
Two wheeler riders continue to be the most vulnerable group on Bengaluru roads. The city registered 2175 motorcycle related accidents, leading to the deaths of 467 riders. Heavy traffic, frequent lane changes, and high speed movement are considered among the factors contributing to these alarming numbers.
Pedestrians also continue to face significant risks. Although only 216 pedestrian related accidents were officially recorded, these incidents resulted in 241 deaths, showing how severe such collisions can be. Safety experts have repeatedly emphasized the need for better pedestrian crossings, improved traffic discipline, and stronger enforcement to reduce fatalities.
Another notable observation from the report is that most accidents did not occur during adverse weather conditions. Around 4213 crashes and 755 deaths happened when the weather was clear and sunny, indicating that poor visibility or rain was not the primary cause in most cases. Instead, factors such as speeding, driver negligence, and failure to follow traffic rules appear to have played a much larger role.
Road safety specialists say the findings should serve as an important reminder for both authorities and motorists. Strengthening traffic law enforcement, improving road safety awareness, encouraging responsible driving habits, and protecting vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and two wheeler riders will be essential if Bengaluru hopes to reduce accident numbers and save more lives in the coming years.
