An FIR has been filed against around 40 Army personnel, including a commanding officer and a major, for allegedly attacking police officers and vandalising a police station in Kishtwar district of Jammu and Kashmir.
According to the police complaint, Colonel N. Arun Gandhi, Commanding Officer of the 17 Rashtriya Rifles, Major Vikas Sharma, Naib Subedar Shankar Gurkhe, and 30 to 40 unidentified Army personnel have been named in the FIR. They are accused of forcibly entering the Atholi Police Station, assaulting police personnel and government officials, and damaging public property.
The accused are facing charges including attempt to murder, assault on public servants, and destruction of government property. The Indian Army has stated that it will fully cooperate with the legal process and the ongoing investigation.
In an official statement, a defence spokesperson said the matter is related to an FIR registered by the local police in Atholi and is currently under examination through established institutional procedures. The spokesperson added that appropriate action will be taken based on the findings of the joint investigation and declined to comment further while the inquiry is underway.
Among those reportedly injured in the incident are Deputy Superintendent of Police Vijay Kumar Bhagat and Atholi Police Station House Officer (SHO) Amrit Katoch.
According to the FIR filed by the SHO, the incident took place while officials were attending a government programme chaired by the Deputy Commissioner of Kishtwar at the Block Development Office in Paddar. During that time, a group of Army personnel allegedly entered the police station.
Reports suggest the incident was triggered after the Assistant Regional Transport Officer (ARTO) in Kishtwar seized an Army vehicle. The FIR further alleges that the personnel climbed over the main gate and boundary wall to enter the police station, carrying sticks, iron rods, and service weapons.
