The bi-weekly express train that previously operated between Kacheguda and Murdeshwar has now been officially extended up to Kumta. The train service had earlier been extended to Murdeshwar back in October 2024. Now, following consistent efforts from MP Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri, the newly extended route has officially commenced operations.
The service began on June 19, 2026, from Kacheguda and on June 20, 2026, from Kumta. This extension is anticipated to provide a major boost to both regional tourism and the local economy.
Route Schedule & Travel Duration:
The service operates twice a week under train number 12789 (Kacheguda to Kumta), departing Kacheguda at 06:05 AM every Tuesday and Friday, passing through Murdeshwar the following afternoon at 01:48 PM, and reaching its final destination of Kumta at 02:40 PM.
Operating on Wednesdays and Saturdays, the 12790 Kumta – Kacheguda Express departs Kumta at 03:25 PM, passing through Murdeshwar at 04:04 PM and reaching Mangaluru Central around 08:00 PM before terminating at Kacheguda the following night at 11:40 PM. The entire journey takes roughly 32 to 35 hours, during which the train runs at a standard Express speed between Kumta and Mangaluru, transitioning into a Superfast service between Mangaluru and Kacheguda.

Running across the South Central Railway (SCR) and Konkan Railway (KR) networks, the train connects several prominent junctions across multiple states:
Telangana & Andhra Pradesh: Kacheguda, Jadcherla, Mahbubnagar, Kurnool, Dhone, Yerraguntla, Kadapa, Renigunta (Tirupati access point).
Tamil Nadu & Kerala: Katpadi, Salem, Erode, Tiruppur, Coimbatore, Shoranur, Tirur, Kozhikode, Kannur, Kasaragod.
Coastal Karnataka: Mangaluru Central, Udupi, Barkur, Kundapura, Byndoor (Mookambika Road), Bhatkal, Murdeshwar, and Kumta.
Equipped with safe, modern LHB (Linke Hofmann Busch) coaches, the train offers a variety of travel classes including First Class AC (1A), 2-Tier AC (2A), 3-Tier AC (3A), Sleeper Class (SL), and General Unreserved (UR) coaches. Onboard catering and e-catering facilities are available, with meals priced around Rs 300 to rs 600.
For pilgrims headbound for Tirupati, Renigunta Junction serves as the primary deboarding point. The distance between Kumta and Renigunta spans approximately 1,100 to 1,150 km.
For budget travelers, the Second Seating (2S) ticket is the most affordable option, ranging between Rs 450 and Rs 550. A standard Sleeper Class (SL) ticket is priced from Rs 550 to Rs 650. If you prefer air-conditioned travel, the 3-Tier AC (3A) coach fare ranges between Rs 1,450 and Rs 1,650.
For additional comfort, the 2-Tier AC (2A) ticket will cost you anywhere from Rs 2,050 to Rs 2,250. The premium First Class AC (1A) ticket ranges between Rs 3,400 and Rs 3,700, depending on seasonal availability.
