Heavy Rainfall Alert in Karnataka for Next 5 Days

IMD has issued active color-coded alerts across Karnataka, primarily driven by strong pre-monsoon squall lines, active lightning activity, and the advancing southwest monsoon.

Heavy Rainfall Alert: The India Meteorological Department issuing severe weather warnings for the next few days, the upcoming pre-monsoon showers and intense squall lines (lines of severe thunderstorms) are expected to cause brief operational delays, traffic disruptions, and minor property damage across the state.

IMD has issued active color-coded alerts across Karnataka, primarily driven by strong pre-monsoon squall lines, active lightning activity, and the advancing southwest monsoon.

Here are the specific district-wise alert levels issued by the IMD:

Yellow Alert (Be Aware):

A Yellow Alert is currently active for Bengaluru and a majority of the South Interior and Coastal districts through May 25. While conditions will bring isolated heavy downpours, the primary threat here is severe thunderstorm activity, frequent cloud-to-ground lightning, and sudden visibility drops.

Impacted Districts: Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural, Tumakuru, Chamarajanagar, Kolar, Ramanagara, Mandya, Mysuru, Hassan, and parts of Coastal Karnataka (Uttara Kannada, Udupi, Dakshina Kannada).

What to expect: Sudden, heavy patches of rain (especially during late afternoon/evening hours), localized waterlogging, traffic bottlenecks in urban spaces, and gusty winds averaging 30 to 40 km/h.

Orange Alert (Be Prepared):

An Orange Alert has been placed over several North Interior and North-South border districts due to the high risk of severe weather anomalies, specifically intense thundersqualls and localized hail.

Impacted Districts: Koppal, Gadag, Bagalkote, Dharwad, Vijayapura, Chitradurga, and Davanagere.

What to expect: High-velocity winds ramping up to 50–60 km/h (with gusts reaching 70 km/h). The IMD explicitly warns of thundersqualls and isolated hailstorms.

Urgent Action Advised: Residents in these interior areas should secure loose outdoor objects, protect standing agricultural produce, and stay indoors during active lightning intervals due to the high risk of falling tree limbs and snapping power lines.

Additionally, the IMD has issued a Squally Weather Warning along and off the Karnataka coast. Fishermen are strictly advised not to venture into the Arabian Sea over the next 48 hours, as wind speeds are reaching 40 to 50 km/h, gusting up to 60 km/h, causing rough sea conditions.

High-Speed Gales (Strong Winds):

Koppal, Gadag, Bagalkote, and Dharwad are the highest-risk districts for strong winds.

These winds are expected to reach a maximum intensity of 50 to 60 kilometers per hour.

The high-speed winds can cause temporary power outages and knock down tree branches.

There is a risk of damage to weak or temporary structures, such as unsecured tin roofs and billboards.

Heavy Rainfall alert in these districts:

Tumakuru, Hassan, Mysuru, Mandya, and both Bengaluru Urban and Rural districts face the highest risk of heavy rain.

The rainfall will likely hit these areas in isolated, intense spells.

This heavy rain can cause sudden waterlogging on roads and localized flash floods in low-lying areas.

Commuters should expect severe traffic congestion, especially during evening hours.

Severe Thunderstorms Alert:

Frequent lightning and severe thunderstorms are expected across 19 districts, including coastal Karnataka.

Active lightning poses a serious danger to anyone out in open fields.

There is a risk of electrocution from snapped power wires on the ground.

Residents should expect sudden power fluctuations during these storms.

Quick Safety Checklist for the Next 5 Days:

During Peak Wind & Lightning: Avoid standing near tall billboards, weak structures, or under large trees. If you are driving, pull over safely away from trees and power lines.

Electronics & Power: Expect erratic power supplies in interior districts. Unplug sensitive electronics during active thunderstorms to protect them from voltage surges caused by lightning.

Commuting in Bengaluru: Plan your travel well before the evening, as light-to-moderate rain combined with cloud cover usually drops visibility and triggers bottleneck traffic jams around major tech corridors and underpasses.

Protecting Crops & Livestock: If you have agricultural land or manage livestock in the Interior districts, move cattle to covered sheds and secure loose materials ahead of the anticipated hailstorms.
