Brutal killing in Mundgod: Chilli powder attack, machete assault leave businessman dead

Karwar ; A gruesome murder has rocked Mundgod in Uttara Kannada district, where a finance businessman was killed in a daring late-night attack inside a hotel. The victim, Zameer Ahmed Dargawala, was targeted by a gang of attackers who executed the crime with chilling precision.

The incident took place on April 24 night at a hotel near the town bus stand. Zameer had gone there with a friend for dinner, unaware that he was being watched. According to sources, the attackers waited for the right opportunity and struck when his friend briefly stepped outside.

The gang, believed to be comprising four to five individuals, barged into the hotel and first incapacitated the victim by throwing chilli powder into his eyes. Blinded and disoriented, Zameer attempted to flee towards the kitchen, but the attackers pursued him relentlessly.

In a horrifying sequence, the attackers caught hold of him and repeatedly stabbed him with a machete, causing fatal injuries. There are also unconfirmed reports suggesting that a firearm may have been used during the attack, adding to the brutality of the crime. The accused then fled the scene immediately.

The incident created panic among those present at the hotel. The owner and staff, terrified by the violence, quickly informed the police. Mundgod police reached the spot and initiated an investigation, later sending the body for post-mortem.

Top police officials visited the scene and have begun a detailed probe. CCTV footage from the surrounding area is being analysed, and multiple teams have been deployed to trace the suspects.

Investigators are also looking into the victim’s background. Zameer was reportedly involved in finance business dealings and had previously been kidnapped for ransom nearly 18 months ago. In that case, kidnappers had demanded around ₹30 lakh, but he was rescued in a police operation.

Authorities are examining whether the earlier kidnapping has any link to the current murder. While no arrests have been made so far, police are confident of cracking the case soon.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the town, with residents expressing fear over rising crime. The brutal nature of the attack in a public setting has intensified concerns about safety and security in smaller towns like Mundgod.
