India to reportedly stop buying oil from Russia, Trump calls it a ‘big step’

Washington: U.S. President Donald Trump has claimed that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi informed him that India will stop purchasing oil from Russia, calling it a “big step” aimed at economically isolating Russia.

Speaking to reporters at a White House event, Trump said, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi is my good friend. I had expressed concern about India buying oil from Russia, and he told me that India will no longer purchase oil from Russia.”

Trump further remarked, “This is a significant move. We urge China to follow suit.”

Attempts to confirm Modi’s statement through India’s embassy in Washington, D.C., via email have so far not elicited any response.

If accurate, India’s decision would mark a pivotal shift in global energy geopolitics, potentially affecting supply chains, pricing, and international alliances. It underscores the growing pressure on countries to recalibrate energy imports in response to geopolitical conflicts.

The announcement also signals India’s alignment with broader U.S. and Western policy objectives, while balancing its strategic and economic interests in the energy sector. Analysts suggest that such a move could influence oil markets, Russia’s economic position, and regional energy security dynamics.

No official statement from the Indian government has yet been issued regarding the claim, leaving international observers awaiting confirmation.

This development is expected to have far-reaching implications for global oil trade, energy diplomacy, and India’s relations with both Russia and Western nations.
