Islamabad: Tensions between former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan and Pakistan Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir are escalating, with both leaders now questioning each other’s mental stability. The conflict, which began with sharp accusations, has intensified in recent days, drawing global attention.
Imran Khan labeled Asim Munir as a “mentally unstable general” in statements from his official channels. He accused Munir of being responsible for undermining Pakistan’s constitution and legal system. Khan’s supporters have been actively voicing concerns about the army’s involvement in political matters, raising fears of unrest across the country.
In response, the Pakistan Army described Imran Khan as a “narcissist,” highlighting what it called Khan’s excessive self-interest and attempts to manipulate public opinion. Lieutenant General Ahmad Sharif Chaudhry, a spokesperson for the army, said, “Imran Khan and his family are making statements that undermine the moral authority of Pakistan’s armed forces. His political ambitions are evident, and he is using jail visits to influence opinions against the army.”
The controversy deepened after Imran Khan’s sister, Alima Khan, visited him in jail and accused Field Marshal Munir of plotting against India and described Imran Khan as a “friend of India.” These comments further inflamed tensions and raised questions about Pakistan’s internal stability.
The ongoing feud has attracted widespread media coverage, highlighting the political turmoil in the country. Analysts say the confrontation could have serious implications for civil-military relations in Pakistan, especially with Imran Khan maintaining a significant following despite his incarceration.
Both sides appear unwilling to back down, and the situation remains volatile. Observers are closely monitoring developments, concerned that further clashes could exacerbate political instability in Pakistan.
