Belagavi : A tragic incident in Belagavi district has come to light, where a 28-year-old married woman allegedly died by suicide after prolonged harassment, religious conversion pressure, and death threats from a local man. The incident occurred in Gonaganur village of Ramdurg taluk.
The deceased, identified as Nagavva Demappa Vantamoori, was reportedly subjected to continuous intimidation by Maktumsab Patil, a resident of the same village. According to the victim’s family, Maktumsab allegedly pressured her to convert to Islam and threatened to kill her if she refused. He also allegedly insisted she continue an illicit relationship with him, despite her attempts to distance herself.
Nagavva was married to Demappa nine years ago. About a year into the marriage, she came into contact with Maktumsab, and the two reportedly developed an illicit relationship. When her family discovered this, they strongly advised her to end the association. Following their counsel, Nagavva stopped meeting Maktumsab and attempted to return to normal life.
However, her family alleges that once she broke ties, Maktumsab began harassing her aggressively. He allegedly visited her home frequently, issuing threats, demanding that she convert to Islam, and forcing her to continue the relationship. Unable to bear the ongoing intimidation, Nagavva was found hanging inside her house, leading to shock and outrage in the village.
Her relatives have blamed Maktumsab directly for driving her to suicide and have demanded strict action against him. Katakol police visited the spot and conducted an initial inspection. The body has been shifted to Belagavi BIMS Hospital for postmortem. Based on the family’s complaint, a case has been registered at Katakol Police Station, and further investigation is underway.
