Heavy Rainfall and Floods Claim 631 Lives in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan

Pakistan: According to a report by the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), 631 people have lost their lives due to devastating rainfall and floods in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province during the first nine months of 2025.

The PDMA report, which highlights the severe loss of life and property in the region, states that by September of this year, 631 individuals had died in rain-related incidents, while 429 others sustained injuries. The breakdown of casualties shows that 202 men, 190 women, and 239 children were killed in the floods and heavy rainfall. Additionally, the floods injured 207 men, 86 women, and 145 children.

The report also reveals that a staggering 7,153 livestock were lost due to the flooding, while 3,798 houses were damaged across various districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Out of these, 1,089 houses were severely damaged, and 2,700 houses suffered partial damage from the rain and floods.

Moreover, 796 school buildings were also affected, with 166 completely destroyed and 593 partially damaged, according to the PDMA. The region has been grappling with continuous heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and sudden flooding, particularly during this year’s monsoon season, which began on June 25.

These weather patterns have caused widespread devastation in the province. Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) reports that across the country, at least 853 people have lost their lives due to rain-related incidents and sudden floods, with more than 1,000 people injured since the monsoon began.

Monsoon rains, which typically occur between June and September each year, have severely impacted large parts of Pakistan. As reported by Dawn, the torrential rains, particularly at the end of June, led to catastrophic flooding, landslides, and displacement, affecting vulnerable areas with poor drainage systems and high population density.
