BNP heads for landslide victory in Bangladesh parliamentary polls

Dhaka: The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is heading towards a decisive victory in the parliamentary elections held to replace the interim government that assumed office after the fall of the Awami League administration led by Sheikh Hasina in August 2024.

According to multiple media reports, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party has secured more than 151 seats in the 300-member Jatiya Sangsad, crossing the halfway mark required for a simple majority. However, the Election Commission of Bangladesh is yet to make an official announcement confirming the final results.

Out of the 300 constituencies, polling was conducted in 299 seats, while voting in one constituency was postponed following the death of a candidate. More than 2,000 candidates, including independents, contested the elections, making it one of the most closely watched polls in recent years.

Although counting is still underway in several constituencies, trends indicate that the BNP has achieved a clear majority. Election Commission officials stated that final results are expected to be declared shortly.

The election comes in the backdrop of significant political upheaval. Following the ouster of Sheikh Hasina and the subsequent dissolution of the Awami League, the political landscape witnessed a direct contest primarily between the BNP and its former ally, Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh. The absence of the Awami League reshaped the electoral dynamics, turning the polls into a high-stakes battle for political dominance.

The BNP had earlier announced that if it secured a majority, Tarique Rahman — son of party chairperson and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia — would assume the post of Prime Minister. His potential elevation marks a significant political development, signaling a possible generational shift in the country’s leadership.

Political observers note that the outcome could redefine Bangladesh’s domestic and foreign policy direction after months of uncertainty under the interim administration. The coming days are expected to see formal declarations and political consultations as the country prepares for the formation of a new government.
