Bangladesh witnesses third Hindu killing amid anti-India protests

Dhaka: Tensions in Bangladesh have escalated as anti-India protests continue, with the minority Hindu community increasingly coming under attack. Within just two weeks, three Hindus have been killed in targeted violence, raising concerns over the safety of religious minorities in the country.

The latest incident occurred at a garment factory in the Mymensingh district, one of Bangladesh’s major textile hubs. The victim, 42-year-old Bajendra Biswas, a security guard at the Labib Group Garments factory, was shot dead by a colleague during duty hours. Reports confirm that the accused, 29-year-old Nonam Mia, also a security guard, used a shotgun to carry out the attack.

Despite being rushed to a hospital after sustaining critical injuries, Bajendra Biswas could not be saved. Post-mortem procedures have been completed, and the body has been handed over to his family.

Bajendra’s impoverished family staged a protest in front of the factory, demanding justice, but police reportedly intervened and tried to disperse the demonstrators.

This killing follows the recent murders of Hindu individuals Deepu Chandradas and Amrit Mondal, both of whom were also victims of violent attacks linked to the ongoing anti-India demonstrations.

In addition to these killings, reports indicate that several Hindu homes have been attacked, with some being set on fire and destroyed, creating widespread fear among the minority community.

Authorities have taken the accused into custody, but the string of violent incidents has left Bangladesh’s Hindu population alarmed and vulnerable. Analysts note that the repeated attacks highlight systemic issues regarding minority protection and the challenges faced by authorities in curbing mob violence and targeted killings.

Civil society groups and activists have condemned the attacks, calling for stringent action against perpetrators and better safeguards for religious minorities. The international community has also been urged to monitor the situation closely to prevent further escalation.

As Bangladesh grapples with internal unrest and protests against India, the rising number of attacks on Hindus underscores the urgent need for government intervention to protect minority communities and uphold law and order.
