Ashgabat Summit: Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif faced an awkward diplomatic moment at the International Peace and Confidence Forum held in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, when he had to wait over 40 minutes to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin. The incident, widely circulated on social media, has sparked discussions on international protocol and diplomatic patience.
The summit marked the 30th anniversary of the declaration of neutrality by the former Soviet state of Turkmenistan. Leaders from Russia, Turkey, Iran, and Pakistan were invited to participate in high-level discussions on regional peace and cooperation.
PM Sharif was scheduled for a bilateral meeting with President Putin during the event, which was intended to strengthen ties between the two countries. However, according to on-site reports and viral footage, President Putin did not meet Sharif at the scheduled time, forcing the Pakistani Prime Minister to wait for more than 40 minutes.
The video shows Sharif visibly growing impatient while waiting alongside Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and other officials. After 40 minutes, realizing that Putin would not be available immediately, Sharif moved toward the area where Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was conducting his meetings.
The sequence of events, captured in a 14-second clip, shows Sharif shifting attention toward Erdogan, only to meet Putin later in the session. This moment has attracted significant attention on social media, with netizens commenting on the unusual delay and the apparent prioritization of other leaders by the Russian President.
This incident comes shortly after President Putin’s two-day visit to India, where he held extensive talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. During that visit, Russia and India signed several critical agreements, underscoring the strategic partnership between the two nations.
The contrast between Putin’s scheduling in India and Sharif’s wait in Turkmenistan has fueled discussions in diplomatic circles regarding protocol, hierarchy, and respect among world leaders.
