Why Most Smartphones Place the Power Button on the Right Side
Smartphone manufacturers now consistently place the power button on the right side of devices. The design choice is linked to user comfort accessibility and the way most people naturally hold phones.
Many smartphone users operate their devices every day without thinking about the small design decisions that shape their experience. One common feature across almost all modern smartphones is the placement of the power button on the right side of the device. Whether the phone is made by Apple Samsung or any other major brand the power button is almost always located in the same position.
Interestingly this was not always the case. In the early days of smartphones companies experimented with different button placements. Some models had the power button on the top edge while others placed it on the back panel of the phone. Manufacturers were still exploring the most comfortable and practical layout for users.
For example older devices such as the iPhone 5s featured the power button on the top of the phone. Later Apple shifted the button to the right side starting with the iPhone 6. Other manufacturers also tried different approaches. One well known example is the LG G3 where the power button was placed on the rear panel of the device rather than on the sides.
Over time manufacturers observed how people naturally hold their phones during daily use. Studies and user feedback showed that most people hold their smartphones in their right hand. When the device is held this way the thumb naturally rests near the upper right side of the phone making it easier to reach buttons located there.
Because of this natural hand position placing the power button on the right side allows users to lock or unlock the phone without adjusting their grip. This simple design decision improves comfort and makes the device easier to operate with one hand. It also reduces the chances of dropping the phone while trying to reach the button.
Accessibility has also played a major role in standardizing this layout. Smartphone makers aim to create devices that feel intuitive from the moment someone picks them up. By keeping the power button on the right side companies ensure that users across different brands experience a familiar and convenient interface.
Today the right side power button has become an industry wide design standard. It reflects years of observation about user behavior and shows how even small design choices can make everyday technology easier and more comfortable to use.
