New Aadhaar App launched: Big changes, Aadhaar card holder must know

New Aadhaar App launched: The launch of the new Aadhaar app on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, marks a significant pivot from simply “carrying” your ID to “controlling” how it is used. Unlike the legacy mAadhaar app, this version is built specifically to comply with the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act.

Here is a breakdown of what makes this new app fundamentally different:

Selective Credential Sharing (The “Need-to-Know” Basis) The biggest shift is the move away from the “all-or-nothing” approach.

Old Way: You showed your Aadhaar card or a digital copy, exposing your full name, father’s name, DOB, address, and the 12-digit UID.

New Way: You can now generate a customized QR code or a Share ID. For instance, if a social media platform needs to verify you are over 16, you can choose to share only a “Verified Age > 16” status without revealing your actual date of birth or your Aadhaar number.

Offline Verification Without Internet: The app enables secure verification even in areas with no connectivity.

Digital Signatures: The app stores a digitally signed, encrypted version of your credentials locally on your phone.

No Database Query: When a verifier scans your QR code, their device validates UIDAI’s digital signature locally. This means the verification happens without pinging the central Aadhaar database, further protecting your privacy.

“One Family – One App” Concept: To solve the issue of minors or elderly family members who don’t have their own smartphones:

You can now manage up to five Aadhaar profiles on a single device linked to the same mobile number.

This is the technical bridge for the Karnataka government’s plan; a parent can verify their child’s age for a social media account directly from the parent’s phone using the child’s profile in the app.

        Advanced Security Features:

        Face Authentication:

The app uses Face ID for “Proof of Presence.” This ensures that the person presenting the digital ID is the actual owner, preventing the use of stolen phones or screenshots.

          Biometric Lock/Unlock:

You can “freeze” your biometrics with a single tap in the app, preventing any unauthorized fingerprint or iris authentication at ATMs or POS machines.

          Authentication History:

You can now see a real-time log of where and when your Aadhaar was used, allowing you to spot and report any suspicious activity immediately.

          Digital Contact Card:

The app includes a new feature that lets you share your contact details (mobile number and email) via a secure QR code. This is intended to replace the risky practice of writing your Aadhaar number or mobile number on visitor logs at office buildings or gated communities.
