Meta Muse Image AI Raises Privacy Questions Over Public Instagram Photos and How Users Can Disable the Feature
Meta new Muse Image AI has sparked privacy concerns as public Instagram content can be referenced for AI image creation while users can choose to disable the feature manually.

Meta’s newly introduced Muse Image AI tool has quickly become the center of an online privacy debate. The feature allows AI generated images to use public Instagram content as reference material, leading many users to question how their photos could be used without their direct knowledge. The discussion has intensified as more people learn that the option is enabled by default for many public accounts.
According to Meta, Muse Image is its most advanced image generation model so far. It can create images from text prompts, edit visuals with precision and combine multiple reference images while using Instagram as a social context source. The feature is currently available for users in the United States through the Meta AI app, web browsers, WhatsApp and Instagram Stories.
The main concern is that users with public Instagram accounts may have their photos referenced by others when generating AI images. Someone could create an entirely new image inspired by publicly available pictures, placing a person into different scenes or situations without first requesting permission. Critics argue that such capabilities increase the risk of impersonation, misleading content and deepfake style creations.
Meta has clarified that the feature only works with content from public Instagram accounts. Photos and videos from private accounts, as well as accounts belonging to users under the age of 18, are excluded from this functionality. However, many users are worried because public accounts are automatically included unless the account owner manually changes the settings.
Privacy advocates have also pointed out that users are not notified when their public content is used as a reference for AI image generation. This lack of alerts has become one of the biggest issues raised after the launch, as many people may remain unaware that their publicly shared images can be referenced by others.
The company has stated that users who do not want their public content to be available for this purpose can disable the option. Turning off the setting does not affect the visibility of an Instagram profile, posts, followers or any regular account features. It only prevents eligible public content from being used by other people through supported Meta AI features.
To disable the feature, users can open Instagram, visit their profile and tap the menu in the upper corner. From there, they should scroll to the Sharing and reuse section and locate the option that allows people to use their content with AI features on Meta. Disabling this setting for both posts and reels will stop public content from being available for this specific AI feature.
Users with private Instagram accounts do not need to take this additional step because their content is already excluded from being used as reference material by Muse Image. Even so, reviewing privacy settings regularly is still recommended for anyone who wants greater control over how their content is shared.
Another important point highlighted by Meta is that switching off this option does not necessarily remove a user’s content from every AI related process within the company. The setting specifically controls whether other users can reference eligible public content with supported Meta AI features. It does not automatically opt users out of every possible AI training or processing activity, which may be governed by separate policies.
As conversations around artificial intelligence and digital privacy continue to grow, the launch of Muse Image AI has become another reminder for users to review their account settings carefully. Understanding available privacy controls can help people decide how their public content is shared while reducing unwanted use of their images in AI generated creations.
