Apple Reportedly Preparing Touchscreen MacBook Pro With Samsung OLED Display

Apple is reportedly moving closer to introducing its first touchscreen MacBook Pro, a product that could mark one of the biggest design changes in the history of the MacBook lineup. Industry reports suggest the company is developing premium models with OLED displays, and Samsung Display is expected to play a key role by supplying the advanced touch panels.

According to reports citing industry sources, Samsung Display is likely to become the exclusive supplier of OLED touchscreen panels for the upcoming MacBook Pro models. While the final supply agreement is yet to be signed, Apple is said to have involved Samsung from the early stages of development. The display panels are expected to use oxide thin film transistor technology, an RGB OLED structure and integrated touch functionality to deliver improved image quality and responsiveness.

The new MacBook Pro is expected to be offered in both 14 inch and 16 inch display sizes. The addition of touchscreen support would represent a significant change for Apple, which has traditionally maintained a clear distinction between its MacBook and iPad product lines. For years, the company argued that touch input was better suited to tablets, while laptops delivered the best experience with a keyboard and trackpad.

If the reports prove accurate, Apple may finally be reconsidering that philosophy as touchscreen laptops continue to gain popularity in the premium computing segment. Interestingly, reports indicate that LG Display, which currently supplies OLED panels for Apple’s iPad Pro and displays for existing MacBook Pro models, may not be involved in this particular project. Instead, Samsung Display appears to be the preferred partner for the new generation of OLED MacBook panels.

Earlier rumors also suggested that Apple has been working on an entirely new MacBook Ultra model. That device is expected to become the company’s most premium laptop and could debut with touchscreen support, a next generation Apple chipset and the first OLED display ever used in a MacBook. The Ultra branding would position it above the existing MacBook Pro lineup, targeting professionals and power users.

Apple recently introduced its latest MacBook Pro models in India, but the company has not officially confirmed any plans for a touchscreen version. As a result, the reported specifications remain based on industry leaks and supply chain information.

If Apple launches a touchscreen MacBook Pro with an OLED display, it would signal a major evolution for the Mac lineup.
