Dharmasthala Case SIT interim report: Big day in Assembly

Dharmasthala Case: The investigation into the Dharmasthala case has quickly become a major political battleground in Karnataka, with the BJP and the Congress party locked in a fierce “mega-fight.” What began as a legal and criminal investigation has been reframed as a clash over faith, identity, and political narrative.

The BJP and its affiliated Hindutva organizations have framed the SIT probe as a conspiracy to defame a prominent Hindu temple. They allege that the investigation is a “toolkit” orchestrated by “urban Naxals” and “international hands” to hurt Hindu sentiments and discredit the temple’s revered Dharmadhikari, Dr. Veerendra Heggade, who was nominated to the Rajya Sabha by the BJP.

BJP leaders have questioned the government’s motives for forming the SIT, especially after a key witness in a related case (the Sowjanya murder case) was acquitted. They are demanding an interim report on the probe and have planned protests, with a delegation visiting Dharmasthala to show solidarity with the temple authorities. The BJP sees this as a potential campaign plank for future elections.

The Congress government, led by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, insists that the SIT was formed with “good intentions” to uncover the truth and not to malign the temple. They argue that if a serious complaint was made before a magistrate, it was the government’s duty to investigate it. They also point out that the opposition would have criticized them for a lack of action if they had ignored the allegations.

Home Minister G. Parameshwara has stated that the government wants to find the truth so that “those facing allegations are treated fairly.” He has also warned that if the claims are found to be false, legal action will be taken against those who made the false allegations.

However, there is some internal friction within the Congress. Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has taken a stance more aligned with the BJP, calling the allegations a “big conspiracy to tarnish the pilgrim town,” a statement that highlights the party’s concern about being labeled as anti-Hindu.

According to recent reports, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) investigating the Dharmasthala case is unlikely to submit an interim report to the government. Instead, Karnataka’s Home Minister, G. Parameshwara, is scheduled to make a statement about the ongoing probe in the state legislature on August 18, 2025.

The SIT will not be presenting an interim report. The team is, however, regularly updating the Director General and Inspector General of Police on the progress of the investigation.

The Home Minister’s statement in the Assembly is expected to provide an update on the SIT’s work and the progress made so far. This comes after the BJP demanded updates on the probe and clashed with the government in the Assembly.
