Rohit Sharma led Team India climbed to the top of the World Test Championship (WTC) rankings on Sunday, March 3, after Australia defeated New Zealand in the first Test in Wellington. The Australia continued their fine run against their trans-Tasman rivals with a 172-run win on Sunday, taking a 1-0 lead in the series.

Ahead of the first Test, New Zealand sits at the summit with an impressive tally of 36 points from four matches, with a score of 75 per cent. However, the landscape of the WTC changed dramatically after a massive 172-run loss against Australia. The loss saw him relinquish his prime, dropping to second place with a low score of 60.

On the other hand, India, who was in second place with 62 points from eight matches earlier, rose to the top, increasing their percentage to 64.58 points, thus overtaking New Zealand. Australia’s victory in Wellington not only reshuffled the rankings but also cemented their position in third place.

The victory was notably orchestrated by Nathan Lyon, whose phenomenal six-wicket haul in the fourth innings played a key role. With this win, Australia’s points increased from 66 to 78 and their point’s percentage improved from 55 to 59.09. As the 2023 champions, Australia will now look to climb further up the rankings.

A win in the final Test against New Zealand would allow the WTC title holders to leapfrog their neighbours into second place. However, Pat Cummins has a chance to top the rankings and is eyeing the match between India and England in Dharamsala.

If England manages to defeat India, the Aussies will have a chance to stay at the top of the table for the time being. The next chapter of the trans-Tasman rivalry unfolds in Christchurch, where the final Test between New Zealand and Australia will begin on March 8. India and England will play the final match of the series in Dharamsala from March 7. The hosts have already sealed the series with their win in Ranchi.
