The opening match of IPL 2025 between Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bangalore at Eden Gardens on Saturday, March 22, is facing uncertainty due to inclement weather. Around 11 am, it will be cloudy with a maximum chance of rain of 66%. This could pose a significant challenge to preparations at Eden Gardens and the opening ceremony, which is scheduled to begin between 6:20 and 6:45 PM Indian time.

Heavy rain and thunderstorms are forecast in Kolkata on Saturday, which could prevent the match from continuing. On Friday, the teams’ training sessions were also marred by weather, with both teams having to abandon pre-match routines midway through after evening rain.

The rain is also likely to affect the opening ceremony, which will be attended by artists Karan Aujla, Disha Patani and Shreya Ghosal. If the match is called off due to rain, both teams will share one point each.

The IPL 2025 season will begin with a marquee clash between KKR, led by new captain Ajinkya Rahane, and RCB, led by Rajat Patidar. Fresh from their title-winning campaign in 2024, KKR are set to defend their crown, while RCB are aiming to break their long-standing trophy drought.

The match holds extra significance as Kolkata is hosting the IPL opening ceremony for the first time since 2015. It will feature performances by Shreya Ghoshal, Karan Aujla and Disha Patani, as well as a showcase of West Bengal’s art and culture.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is also expected to participate, providing more opportunities for a smooth event.
