Lok Sabha Election 2024: Former cricketer, MP Gautam Gambhir quit BJP

Gautam Gambhir asked party Chief JP Nadda to relieve him of his political duties so that he could focus on his upcoming cricketing commitments.

Cricketer and politician Gautam Gambhir announced his retirement from politics on Saturday. The 42-year-old BJP Lok Sabha member from East Delhi Lok Sabha constituency took to his social media account to announce his exit from the saffron party.

Former Indian cricketer joined the BJP in March 2019 and is one of the party’s chief representatives in Delhi. In the 2019 elections, the 42-year-old won the East Delhi Lok Sabha constituency with 55% votes. Gambhir, meanwhile, has taken on a mentor role with his former franchise Kolkata Knight Riders ahead of IPL 2024, leaving the former southpaw after serving in a similar role for Lucknow Super Giants.

Gambhir’s tenure with the Super Giants in the 2023 edition saw a huge controversy with Virat Kohli, amid the latter’s on-field spat with Naveen-ul-Haq. The former Indian opener is known as one of the shrewdest captains in IPL history, leading the Knight Riders to the title in 2012 and 2014.
