TRAI says blocklisting spam numbers on mobile won’t stop unwanted calls; use ‘DND’ app to report instead

New Delhi: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has issued new guidelines on how to effectively deal with unsolicited or spam calls, stating that blocking such numbers on personal devices will not stop the calls.

Instead, users are encouraged to report spam numbers through the TRAI’s ‘TRAI DND’ app to help combat the growing problem of unwanted communication.

The regulatory body highlighted that, although users can block numbers on their mobile phones, this does not prevent spammers from switching to new numbers and continuing their attempts. “Simply blocking a number on your phone only hides it from your device. It does not stop the caller from using a different number to continue the harassment,” TRAI explained in its statement.

Instead, TRAI urges users to report spam and fraudulent numbers via its dedicated ‘DND’ (Do Not Disturb) app, which can be used to log the number either through a call or SMS. The app then helps identify, track, and permanently blacklist the number, reducing its chances of being used again for unsolicited communication.

TRAI also announced that over 21 lakh mobile numbers that were used for spamming or fraudulent activities have already been blacklisted and added to the “Do Not Disturb” blacklist.

By reporting such numbers through the official app, TRAI can take swift action to ensure that the number is traced, verified, and permanently deactivated, helping protect users from future disturbances.
