Srinagar Police book media outlets, individuals for spreading misinformation during protests over Khamenei killing
Srinagar: The Srinagar Police have registered cases against certain media outlets and individuals for allegedly spreading false and provocative information in connection with protests condemning the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
According to police officials, preliminary verification found that some news channels, digital platforms and social media users had deliberately circulated misleading content with the intention of inciting unrest and disturbing law and order in the region.
Based on these findings, a First Information Report (FIR) has been lodged at the Cyber Police Station under relevant legal provisions. “Dissemination of malicious misinformation poses a serious threat to peace, security and the integrity of the country.
We have identified multiple profiles that shared false and inflammatory content. They are being examined, and strict legal action will follow if wrongdoing is established,” a senior police officer said.
However, the authorities have not yet disclosed the names of the media organisations or individuals booked in the case. Officials indicated that further details would be made public after due investigation.
The police also issued a strong advisory to citizens and media houses, cautioning against the circulation of unverified or provocative material. “Spreading fake news, inflammatory posts or unconfirmed information can lead to severe legal consequences.
We urge citizens and media institutions to act responsibly and verify facts from official and credible sources before sharing any content that could disturb communal harmony or public order,” the officer added.
The action comes amid heightened tensions following intensified military operations by the United States and Israel against Iran. Reports indicate that American and Israeli forces have carried out fresh airstrikes and missile attacks on multiple targets in Iran, while Tehran has continued retaliatory measures, further escalating the situation in West Asia.
In Jammu and Kashmir, large-scale protests have been reported across several districts condemning the killing of Khamenei. Demonstrations were held in parts of Srinagar and other towns, with protestors expressing outrage and calling for international intervention.
Authorities said they are closely monitoring the situation to prevent any untoward incidents and to ensure that law and order is maintained across the Union Territory.
