PM Modi becomes first world leader to cross 100 million Instagram followers, widens global digital lead

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has crossed the historic milestone of 100 million followers on Instagram, becoming the first world leader and politician to achieve the feat. The landmark underscores Modi’s unmatched digital influence and his dominance across global social media platforms.
Prime Minister Modi joined Instagram in 2014 and has steadily built one of the largest and most engaged online audiences among political leaders worldwide. His follower count now far exceeds that of several prominent global leaders combined, reflecting his massive popularity both in India and internationally.
According to available data, Modi has more than twice the followers of former US President Donald Trump, who currently has around 43.2 million Instagram followers. Indonesia’s President Prabowo Subianto ranks third with approximately 15 million followers, followed by Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva with 14.4 million.
Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has around 11.6 million followers, while Argentina’s President Javier Milei has about 6.4 million followers. Notably, the combined follower count of several top global leaders still remains lower than Modi’s individual total, highlighting his exceptional reach.
Within India as well, Modi maintains a massive lead over other political figures. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is the second most-followed Indian political leader on Instagram with approximately 16.1 million followers. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi follows with around 12.6 million followers.
Political analysts say Modi’s social media success is driven by his consistent digital engagement, direct communication style, and strategic use of visuals to connect with diverse audiences. His Instagram account features a wide range of content, including official events, international visits, cultural moments, and personal glimpses, which have helped strengthen his public connect.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Modi was also honoured during his recent official visit to Israel. The Israeli Parliament, known as the Knesset, conferred upon him the prestigious Speaker of the Knesset Medal — the highest honour awarded by the institution. The award recognises Modi’s contributions toward strengthening strategic relations between India and Israel.
During his address at the Knesset, Modi highlighted the deep historical ties between the two nations and emphasised the growing partnership in defence, technology, and innovation. Following his speech, several Israeli lawmakers interacted with him and took photographs, reflecting his international stature.
Modi’s latest social media milestone further cements his position as one of the most influential political leaders globally in the digital era, demonstrating the growing importance of social media in modern political communication.
