Sources told CNBC-TV18 that most of these employees are working on different sections of the Ola app. Reportedly, the move comes on the back of falling sales of Ola’s electric scooter. Ola, which launched its electric scooter in December last year, has been undergoing a restructuring exercise for the past few months. Employees were impacted across teams including product, marketing, sales, supply, technology, business and operations. The layoffs are related to Ola shutting down its instant commerce business Ola Dash and used car business Ola Cars.

The express delivery business closed after the company announced plans to expand with 500 new dark stores in 20 cities in January. More than 30 senior officials, including members of Bhavish Agarwal’s leadership team, have resigned in the last two years.

The company currently has around 2,000 engineers and aims to increase its number to 5,000 in the next 18 months. In light of these efforts, the company is centralizing operations and taking steps to reduce duplication and consolidate functions.

Electric vehicle maker Ola Electric is looking to have more than 200 experience centers across the country by March 2023. These experience centers basically allow customers to experience their product before buying it.
