Kanpur Constable Suspended After Allegedly Taking Free Food from Street Vendors

A police constable in Kanpur faced suspension after vendors accused him of repeatedly demanding free snacks and ice cream, with video evidence prompting departmental action.

A police constable attached to a Police Response Vehicle unit in Kanpur has been suspended following allegations that he regularly collected food items from street vendors without making any payment.

The issue came to light after local traders and vendors reportedly grew frustrated with the constable’s repeated behavior. According to their claims, he frequently approached stalls and asked for items such as pani puri, snacks, and ice cream free of cost.

Members of a vendors’ association decided to document the incidents. They recorded videos showing the constable allegedly accepting and consuming food from roadside sellers. The footage was later circulated on social media, where it quickly gained attention.

The traders’ association also forwarded the video evidence to senior police officials and lodged a formal complaint. Following the complaint, authorities initiated an internal inquiry to verify the allegations.

Officials reviewed the evidence and conducted an investigation into the matter. After finding merit in the complaints raised by the vendors, departmental action was taken against the constable.

Police authorities subsequently suspended the officer pending further proceedings. The action has been viewed as a response to concerns raised by local vendors, who had been seeking intervention over the alleged misconduct.

The incident has sparked discussions about accountability within public service and the importance of maintaining professional conduct while interacting with citizens.
