Honour killing in Maharashtra: Woman marries slain lover during funeral, vows to live as his widow

Maharashtra: In a shocking case of honour killing, a 20-year-old man was brutally murdered by the family of the woman he loved, after they discovered she was in a relationship with someone from another caste.

The incident, which has drawn widespread outrage, took place in Nanded district on Thursday. The victim has been identified as Saksham Tate (20). Police said the woman, Aanchal, had been in a relationship with Saksham for nearly three years.

Despite repeated opposition and threats from her family, she continued the relationship. Her family strongly objected to the match due to caste differences.

According to the investigation, Aanchal’s father and brother allegedly intercepted Saksham, shot at him, and later smashed his head with a boulder, killing him on the spot. Police described the murder as “planned, deliberate, and driven by caste prejudice.”

Authorities have registered a case under multiple sections related to murder and criminal conspiracy. Six accused have been arrested so far, while further investigation is underway.

A devastated lover marries the deceased:

In a dramatic and emotionally charged turn of events, Aanchal arrived at Saksham’s funeral and performed symbolic wedding rituals with his body. Eyewitnesses said she applied turmeric on Saksham’s forehead, placed sindoor on her own head, and declared herself his wife.

Aanchal, overwhelmed with grief, said:

“Look, Saksham… even in death, our love has won. My father and brother have lost. You may not be alive today, but our love survives.” She further vowed to live the rest of her life at Saksham’s home as his widow and take care of his grieving parents.

Relationship began through her brother:

Police revealed that Saksham initially became acquainted with Aanchal through her brother. He frequently visited their home, and over time, friendship developed into love. As the relationship deepened, the families became aware and strongly opposed it.

Despite multiple threats, Aanchal refused to give up on the relationship, which led to growing resentment and eventually the brutal murder planned by her father and brother.

Demand for strict punishment:

Aanchal has urged authorities to impose the death penalty on her father and brother, stating that she wants justice for Saksham.

The incident has sparked concern and debate across Maharashtra regarding caste discrimination and honour killings, highlighting once again the deadly consequences of rigid social barriers.
