Kumaraswamy says efforts will be made to include Bhagavad Gita in school and university curriculum

Shivamogga: Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel H.D. Kumaraswamy on Sunday announced that efforts will be initiated to include the Bhagavad Gita in the curriculum of schools, colleges and universities across the country. He said discussions in this regard would soon be held with Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

Kumaraswamy was speaking at the Bhagavad Gita Abhiyana Mahasamarpane programme, where former Deputy Chief Minister K.S. Eshwarappa urged him to take steps to introduce the sacred text in educational syllabi. Responding to the request, Kumaraswamy assured that necessary measures will be taken in the coming days.

Stressing the need for value-based education, Kumaraswamy said epics like the Ramayana and Mahabharata should be taught to guide children on the right path. “At a time when violence, unlawful activities and unrest are becoming a part of everyday life, teaching the Bhagavad Gita to children is the need of the hour.

It serves as a guiding light for the younger generation and helps in nurturing a peaceful society,” he said, adding that everyone must imbibe the values taught in the Gita.

Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan, who also addressed the event, said the Bhagavad Gita is a matter of pride for every Indian, as it originated in India. He said the Bhagavad Gita Abhiyan should be expanded across the country to provide a platform for people to learn and adopt its values.

Sonda Swarnavalli Mahasansthan seer Gangadharendra Saraswati said introducing the Gita at a young age can help reduce crime rates. The campaign, he said, aims to promote communal harmony and national integration while guiding the youth towards a meaningful life.

Former Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa said studying the Bhagavad Gita helps understand the values of life and offers solutions to all problems. “One must not run away from challenges but face them with courage, confidence and strength. For a healthy society, the Gita is essential,” he added.
