Goa nightclub fire case: co owner Ajay Gupta detained in delhi, two partners flee to Thailand

Panaji: In a major breakthrough in the ongoing investigation into the deadly Goa nightclub fire, Delhi Police on Monday detained Ajay Gupta, one of the four co-owners of the Birch by Romeo Lane nightclub.

The fire, which broke out late on Saturday night (December 6), claimed the lives of 25 people and left several others injured, triggering nationwide outrage over safety violations at entertainment establishments.

According to officials, Gupta was traced and taken into custody in Delhi after police earlier failed to locate him at his residence, prompting the issuance of a Look Out Circular (LOC). Authorities confirmed that Gupta will be brought to Goa for interrogation, after which his formal arrest is expected.

The investigation has also widened internationally, as two other co-owners — Saurabh Luthra and Gaurav Luthra — fled to Thailand shortly after the incident. Interpol has issued a Blue Corner Notice to help track and secure their detention abroad. Another owner, UK-based Surinder Kumar Khosla, is also under the scanner, and an LOC has been issued against him as well.

So far, the number of arrests in the case has risen to five. Those arrested include the nightclub’s general manager Rajeev Modak, manager Vivek Singh, bar manager Rajeev Singhania, gate manager Riyanshu Thakur, and club employee Bharat Kohli.

Police sources say several safety lapses, overcrowding, and possible negligence in emergency measures may have contributed to the high casualty count.

The Goa government has assured strict action and a thorough probe, as families of victims continue to demand accountability. With detentions widening and international notices issued, the case is rapidly evolving into one of the most significant criminal investigations in the state in recent years.
