Cyclone Montha, currently a developing storm over the Bay of Bengal, is expected to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm and is approaching the eastern coast of India. Cyclone Montha: IMD issued heavy rainfall alert in these states.
The cyclone is most likely to make landfall on the Andhra Pradesh coast between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam, near Kakinada, during the evening or night of Tuesday, October 28. Maximum sustained wind speeds are predicted to be 90-100 kmph, gusting up to 110 kmph.
The IMD has issued heavy to very heavy rainfall warnings for several states:
Andhra Pradesh: Heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is likely from October 27 to 29.
Odisha: Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected, particularly in southern coastal districts, from October 27 to 29. A Red Warning has been issued for several districts.
Chennai/Tamil Nadu: Heavy rainfall is anticipated for various parts of Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, with an Orange Alert issued for some districts on October 27.
Kolkata/West Bengal: The outer bands of the cyclone are expected to bring light to moderate rainfall and gusty winds to Kolkata and nearby districts, particularly on October 28 and 29.
Fishermen have been strictly advised not to venture into the sea off the coasts of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Odisha until October 30. Disaster management teams are on high alert, and preparations, including setting up cyclone shelters and cancelling leaves for government employees in vulnerable districts, are underway in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha.
Residents in the affected areas are urged to remain vigilant, follow official advisories from the IMD and local authorities, and take all necessary precautions.
