Communal violence risk in India: MHA issues high alert to states after US-Israel strikes on Iran
New Delhi: In the wake of reported military strikes on Iran by the United States and Israel, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has issued a high alert to all state governments, warning of possible communal tensions within India.
In an advisory sent on February 28, the MHA cautioned that international developments could have “ripple effects” domestically, particularly in a socially sensitive environment. The ministry asked states to remain vigilant about the possibility of provocative speeches during religious gatherings that could inflame communal sentiments.
According to sources, the advisory specifically urged authorities to monitor radical elements who may attempt to exploit the situation by delivering inflammatory sermons or mobilising crowds in support of Iran. State intelligence units have been instructed to intensify information-sharing mechanisms and take preventive steps to ensure that law and order is not disturbed.
Rising tensions in the Middle East
The advisory comes amid heightened tensions in the Middle East following joint military actions reportedly targeting Iranian cities and military infrastructure. The escalating conflict has triggered global concern over a wider regional war, prompting governments worldwide to review internal security preparedness.
Indian authorities are closely watching the situation, both from a diplomatic and internal security perspective. Officials in New Delhi have emphasised the need for restraint by all parties involved in the conflict while prioritising the safety of Indian nationals residing in Gulf countries.
Preventive steps and security focus
Security analysts believe that emotionally charged international incidents can sometimes be misused by extremist organisations to stir unrest in diverse societies like India. The MHA has therefore advised states to keep a close watch on speeches, social media activity, and gatherings that may attempt to incite communal disharmony.
States have also been directed to deploy adequate police forces in sensitive areas, conduct flag marches where necessary, and maintain constant coordination between district administrations and intelligence agencies. Authorities have been asked to act swiftly against misinformation and rumours that could spread panic or fuel tensions.
The Centre has reiterated that maintaining communal harmony is paramount, particularly during periods of global instability. While there have been no major incidents reported so far, officials stress that proactive vigilance is essential to prevent isolated provocations from snowballing into larger disturbances.
With India’s diverse religious and cultural fabric, the government’s advisory reflects a precautionary approach aimed at safeguarding peace and stability during a volatile international situation.
