There are 70.24 crore PAN card holders in India, of which 57.25 crore have successfully linked their PAN cards with Aadhaar. More than 12 crore PAN cards remain unlinked. Last week, reports said that 11.5 crore cards are being deactivated due to non-compliance.

PAN Card: A total of 11.5 crore PAN cards have been deactivated due to failure to link them with Aadhaar cards by the June 30 deadline, according to a Right to Information (RTI) reply issued by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT).

There are 70.24 crore PAN card holders in India, of which 57.25 crore have successfully linked their PAN cards with Aadhaar. More than 12 crore PAN cards remain unlinked. Last week, reports said that 11.5 crore cards are being deactivated due to non-compliance.

The RTI application was filed by Chandrasekhar Gaur, a social activist from Madhya Pradesh. The CBDT informed his application that this linking of PAN and Aadhaar had to be done on or before the specified date, otherwise the PAN would be deactivated.

Specially, for new PAN card applicants, the Aadhaar-PAN link will be processed automatically at the application stage. However, for existing PAN holders who were allotted PAN on or before July 1, 2017, linking their PAN and Aadhaar is considered “mandatory”.

For reactivating a deactivated PAN card, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has imposed a penalty of Rs 1,000.

Step to Reactivate your inactive PAN card:

If you have missed the Aadhaar link deadline and your PAN is inactive, you can reactivate your PAN by providing the Aadhaar details to the Income Tax Department.

Failure to link Pan-Aadhaar within the stipulated date will attract a maximum fee of Rs 1,000 under Section 234H, the Income Tax Department said.

If your PAN is deactivated you need to do the following:

1) You have to write a letter to your jurisdictional AO in the Income Tax Department to activate your PAN.

2) The following documents need to be attached to the letter for activation of PAN:
Indemnity Bond in favor of Income Tax Department. PAN copy of PAN holder regularly filing income tax return. Copy of income tax returns of last three years filed on PAN is deactivated.

3) After submission of letter to Income Tax Department Income Tax Department will take minimum 10-15 days to reactivate PAN.
