Bidar youth arrested for urinating inside Katta Maisamma temple, sparks outrage

Hyderabad ; The city witnessed a flashpoint on religious sensitivity after a 26-year-old man from Karnataka’s Bidar district was arrested for allegedly urinating inside the premises of the Katta Maisamma temple at Safilguda. The incident, captured on video and widely circulated on social media, triggered strong reactions from devotees, Hindu organisations, and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

According to police, the accused, identified as Altaf, illegally entered the temple complex and engaged in the act on the premises, prompting immediate outrage among devotees present at the site. “Some worshippers noticed the act and questioned him. Tempers flared, and he was assaulted before police intervened and took him into custody,” a police official said.

The video footage, which surfaced soon after the incident, shows an angry crowd confronting the accused, with visuals quickly going viral across platforms. Police reached the spot following alerts from locals and registered a case under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). “The accused has been arrested and further investigation is underway. We are verifying the sequence of events and ensuring law and order is maintained,” the official added.

The incident has ignited sharp political and social reactions. Hindu organisations condemned the act as a deliberate insult to religious sentiments and demanded strict action. “Such acts are not mere indiscipline; they are calculated provocations aimed at hurting faith. The sanctity of temples must be protected,” a representative of a Hindu outfit said.

The BJP, too, came down heavily on the Telangana government, accusing it of failing to safeguard religious places. Party leaders alleged a pattern of negligence and demanded exemplary punishment. “This is an unacceptable assault on Hindu faith. The government must send a strong message that religious spaces cannot be desecrated with impunity,” a BJP spokesperson stated, adding that leniency would only embolden offenders.

Some BJP leaders went further, alleging that the ruling Congress government in Telangana had failed to act decisively against repeated incidents targeting Hindu places of worship. They called for stringent legal action and enhanced security at temples across Hyderabad and other parts of the state.

Meanwhile, police appealed for calm and cautioned against spreading unverified information. “We urge citizens not to circulate provocative content or take the law into their own hands. The matter is being handled strictly as per law,” another senior officer said.

The episode has reopened a broader debate on the protection of religious sites, the role of social media in amplifying tensions, and the need for swift, transparent legal action to prevent communal flare-ups. Authorities have increased patrolling in and around sensitive areas to prevent any escalation.

As investigations continue, officials said they would examine whether the act was intentional or driven by other factors, while reaffirming that any offence hurting religious sentiments would be dealt with firmly.
